Best time of year for cheap ski holidays?

If anyone can find a bargain ski holiday at any time of the season, NUCO Travel can. But like any industry, ski travel has its peak and low seasons, therefore some months are less tricker for finding savings than others. With that in mind, here are a few tips on the best time of year for cheap ski holidays: Ski prices fluctuate throughout the winter in Europe. So while New Year and February half-term ski breaks are traditionally the priciest, you can sometimes save on early December ski deals, ski deals after the first week of January and March ski deals. If you’re not travelling with kids in tow, these can be great times to bag a bargain and enjoy great weather conditions in many resorts. If you do want to take your ski holiday at one of the seasonal high points, and you’re taking your kids with you, Christmas ski deals and Easter ski holidays tend to be a little cheaper than half-term and New Year. One note of caution ̶ snow conditions tend to be good around Christmas, but the slopes can get a little slushy once you get into April and May, so choose a high-altitude resort with lots of north-facing slopes and good snow-making capacity if you’re planning rolling a few eggs down those mountains! If your heart’s set on a February half-term or New Year ski holiday, the best way to make savings is often by booking as early as possible ̶ early birds can win big in this snowy sector. Meanwhile, if you fancy and ad-hoc, low-season break and you can be reasonably flexible about your destination, a last-minute ski holiday deal can be surprisingly economical. As you can see, there’s plenty of wriggle room in the winter sports calendar for us to find you a ski holiday that doesn’t break the bank!

Cheap ski resorts

Some snowsports nations tend to be a little more expensive than others, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t find you a bargain in comparison to the regular prices you would expect to pay at a certain resort or in a particular ski area. And there are certain ski resorts which habitually provide excellent value for money, with the perfect combination of reasonable prices and high quality accommodation, facilities and amenities. Here are a few ski resorts across Europe where you can bag a real bargain.

Cheap French ski deals

There are several French ski resorts where the deals are a snip ̶ here are just a couple: Flaine ski holidays represent excellent value for money at any time of year and there are several reasons this is one of the most hassle-free resorts. With a respectable 1600m resort height and a prime position that captures the Grand Massif’s best dump of fresh pow, it’s very snow-sure, plus accommodation is almost all ski-in/ski-out and many residences have onsite spas and pools. Four of the beginner’s slopes here are free, so there’s no need to splash out on a lift pass until you feel ready and furthermore, this is a superb resort for a self-drive and self-catering holiday if you want to prep your own meals and cut costs further. Tignes is a terrific alternative to sister resort which is usually cheaper than its L’Espace Killy sister resort Val d’Isère ̶ and with a 2100m main resort village height and 300km of well-tended slopes to explore in the wider area, it’s heaven for high-altitude skiing, with lots of lovely local runs off the Grande Motte glacier. You’ll find some very low-cost apartments in Tignes (which are still of a decent standard) as well as slightly higher grade options with shared pools and extra amenities. The apres-ski is lively and there’s also a good range of restaurants serving family favourites.

Cheap Italian ski deals

Super snow quality, tasty food and a warm welcome mean that Italy is always a popular snowsports destination. You can find some cheap Italian ski deals at the following resorts: Cervinia shares the Cervino Ski Paradise area with swish Zermatt over in Switzerland, so buy a combo pass here and you can enjoy the best of both sides of the border without overspending. Après, lessons, and food are all more economical on the Cervinia side, and the skiing and snowboarding are still superb in this family-friendly, car-free resort located at 2050m in the shadow of the mighty Matterhorn. **La Thuile** is another low-cost option amongst Italian ski resorts, and you can choose between staying in the old village or Planibel, the newer, purpose-built side of the village where there are some comfy but very low-cost apartments, some of which have facilities like pools and most of which offer doorstep skiing. There’s 150km of cracking corduroy to explore here, shared with sister resort in France, La Rosiere, and the cuisine and apres-ski is cheap and cheerful too.

Cheap Austrian ski deals

As the homeland of our founder, Austria is always close to our hearts, and if you’re in the know you can grab some great ski holiday savings here. Here’s just one Austrian ski resort where you can ski and snowboard on the cheap: Mayrhofen is a terrific traditional resort in the Tyrolean Alps, where there’s a vast 142km skiable area with pistes for enthusiasts of all abilities. Although the resort height is only 630m, it’s snow-sure thanks to its geographical position, with skiing available up to 3250m on the Hinterlux glacier. Mayrhofen is a rather plush resort where there’s high-end accommodation aplenty, but there’s also some lovely self-catering apartments, as well as low-budget B&B style properties where you can dine on a half-board basis with local restaurants providing meals. Part of the Zillertal ski area, there’s a total of 515km to explore if you’re feeling adventurous.

Cheap Andorra ski deals

Andorra is nestled in the Pyrennees between Spain and France, and this tiny principality is an excellent place for a cheap ski holiday, with the added attraction of shopping for bargains that are practically tax-free. There are a couple of Andorra ski areas ̶ here’s the lowdown on our favourite: Grandvalira is Andorra’s largest ski area, with a 216km skiable terrain that includes quality pistes and a smattering of ungroomed runs for more advanced skiers. The popular resorts of Pas de la Casa, El Tarter and Soldeu are all located here and there’s a plethora of cheap but comfy accommodation, plenty of English-speaking ski schools, and four fab terrain parks that snowboarders will love. Grandvalira has long had a reputation as a place to party, but its children’s provision has improved in recent years and its now a good place for families with kids.

Couples ski deals

Skiing and snowboarding are the perfect pastimes for active couples and there’s nothing more romantic than the natural amphitheatre of the Alps and Europe’s other major mountain ranges. Whether you want to book ahead or arrange a list-minute ski break on a whim, we can help you find a great deal ̶ and if it’s a surprise for your significant other, our lips are sealed! You can choose a high-altitude party resort like Val Thorens, a lively location like Italy’s Sauze d’Oulx, or a traditional French resort like Meribel with its chocolate box charm. Meanwhile, in terms of accommodation, we can help you find a beautiful hotel bolthole, cosy apartment or whatever else floats your amorous boat. When it comes to cheap couples ski deals, we’re always happy to play cupid!

Beginners ski deals

When you’re taking your very first ski holiday or are enjoying your first couple of years of snowsports vacations, we know that it’s important to economise while you build your confidence and before you commit to buying your own gear. You might want to choose ski-in/ski-out accommodation in fantastic French resorts like La Plagne and Alpe d’Huez, while several Italian resorts also offer outstanding deals for novices. Whatever your requirements, we’ll help you make sure that you remember your first ski holiday for all the right reasons.

Family ski deals

Economising on your family ski holidays is always important ̶ get really good at it and you could even find yourself with enough savings to pay for an extra ski break each year! Self-drive and self-catering snowsports holidays can be very cheap, but if flights and transfers are more convenient, it’s still perfectly possible to grab a bargain. With its ample ski-in/ski-out accommodation, high-quality ski schools, creches and kindergartens, as well as activities like horse-drawn sleigh rides and husky dog sledding, Avoriaz is always high on the list of top ski resorts to source a bargain break. Alternatively, Morzine is home to lots of cosy and charming chalet-style hotels that are fab for families, there are lots of distractions for kids on and off the slopes and it’ a quick transfer from Geneva Airport.

Group ski deals

Whether you’re getting together with pals for a stag or hen night, taking a snow-kissed break with workmates or simply taking off to the slopes with your besties on a whim, it’s great to grab a group ski deal so that you can save on accommodation, ski equipment hire, and ski passes ̶ it means you’ve got more spare cash to spend on apres-ski entertainment for a start! There are plenty of good group holiday ski resorts where you can secure bargains at different points of the season, but Arc 1800 is a pretty good pick. With and 1800m resort height and a whopping 435km skiable area to unlock across a ski range that stretches from 1200m to 3250m, including lots of blue and red runs for intermediate skiers and a snow park to keep riders happy. Alternatively, Chamonix is an excellent choice if you’re an off-piste powderhound ̶ it’s a traditional rather than purpose-built resort, therefore getting to the slopes can involve a bit of a trek, but the quality once you get there compensates your efforts, as does the dynamic apres-ski scene. Lat but not least, Austria’s Kitzbuhel is a fantastic place to ski, snowboard and socialise, with 230km of slopes for skiers of all stripes in the wider KitzSki area and an apres-ski scene that’s legendary. This is a rather glam resort, but we can still find you the best deals possible on everything from accommodation to ski lessons and lift passes.
