Why Are Skiing And Snowboarding 2 Of The Best Sports In The World?
We all start skiing and snowboarding in different ways and obviously most prefer one to the other. However, more often than not this ends up in a crazy passion for the snow sports world that tends to dominate our lives. But why do these sports have such a big effect on us? I think that there are a number of different reasons but here are my top 3....that I can remember:
Snowboarding and skiing are liberating sports. When we get up in the mountains it's like entering a huge play area. There is so much choice! Some of the monster resorts like Whistler Blackcomb and the 3 Valleys are so big that it's impossible to thoroughly explore every run and tree line in a whole season let alone a week! We get to go where we want, when we want, exploring the vastness of the mountain with a place to rest our feet with a cold beer or a warm brew.....or Vin Chaud! (Hot wine, great combo) waiting at multiple different places all over the mountain, whenever needed. Another greatly liberating aspect to these sports is that we can choose how fast, slow, hard or relaxed we want to ride. Feeling tired or hung over from a late night on the town? Spend most of your day chilling out on chair lifts and lying on the snow sunbathing (weather permitting). Or make use of the other luxuries at ski and snowboard resorts which can include but are not limited to: swimming, ice skating, bowling, cinemas and eating delicious local food (a personal favourite!). Feel like you really need to burn of some steam or just completely wear yourself out? Ride around all day like a complete maniac until you physically can't ski or snowboard any more. Believe me it can be done! Get into freestyle, get into racing, get into cross country skiing, back country hiking, equipment design and instructing. These sports provide a whole world of exiting opportunities to knock us out of that lethargic lifestyle we can far too often find ourselves in.
Whatever it is about skiing and snowboarding it brings good people together. Just like all sports it's a great way to get to know new people, find something in common with others and is an endless source of conservations and hilarious and epic stories of adventure, especially in the student world....often alcohol related of course. And what better chance for romance is there? There's something about the mountains that causes people to want to drop trousers and get it on more than any other place I know of, other than maybe Magaluf and the like. Maybe it's the cool, crisp mountain air or the novelty and danger factor of steaming up a Gondola bubble before hitting the slopes. Or the stunning views that go on for miles, like literally, you can see for miles and miles from the top of the peaks (weather depending!). It is a privileged sport and many of the people involved in the sport like myself are truly blessed to be a part of it. But thanks to dry ski slopes, the Winter Olympics and incredibly good value and high quality travel companies working really, really....really hard (Cough.....NUCO), the world of snow sports is becoming more and more accessible and affordable to more and more people! Hurray for companies like that, we salute you!
The most important aspect of any sport! As a sportsman who has tried a number of different sports throughout my life, snowboarding and skiing repeatedly come out on top of my preference list. I don't believe it's possible to compare team sports like football, rugby, hockey and lacrosse, to name but a few, to solo sports like snowboarding, skiing, archery, tennis and athletics. They are just too different! But as far as solo sports go, snowboarding is my favourite. It has the incredible characteristic of being a solo sport and a team sport at the same time! What's more is that snowboarding doesn't have that thorn in the side that team sports do: if we don't work hard enough in a team, then we are letting the team down. If we don't work hard enough is snow sports, nothing happens! A lot of people don't even ski or board for skiing and boarding, they get involved to socialise and drink! You're not even letting yourself down! We are all up on the mountain doing our own thing, competing predominantly with ourselves (unless we are feeling super competitive and live for that jazz). But we are also spending time together with friends and family, working as a team to help each other improve our own riding abilities. For example: the NUCO Academy. We are all doing our own thing, working on our own skills and tricks that need attention at the time, but we support each other with our different experiences of the sport and help each other out when and where we can. And let's not forget about moral support!
One of the best and most defining points that make skiing and snowboarding so awesome is that they just keep on becoming more and more fun as time goes on. If you get bored easily, these are the sports for you!! There is an unlimited level of difficulty and complexity to the sports, you will never be able to get bored by running out of new runs or ski resorts, there are just too many! And each resort has a whole range of varied and different runs and terrain with varied shape and steepness. If you're feeling like you're doing the same old stuff over and over, simply try jumping of a 3 ft cliff, then realise that cliffs get really really big and you can jump of those too! There is an unlimited combination of tricks for freestyle and plenty of different track designs for racing. The last resort is to turn to the relative dark side and swap those trays for french fries. Boom, even more to work on! I challenge anyone to completely exhaust the potential that skiing and snowboarding offers in their lifetime. The more time and energy we put into the sport, the more we enjoy it, the more fun it becomes and the more doors to new adventures are opened. Also, powder....that's all I'm going to say because saying any more would ruin the surprise. And I don't mean drugs! Those are powders...with an s...honestly.
So the next time your feeling bored, lethargic and without anything productive do, consider snow sports. A whole world of new adventures and opportunities awaits you. Let it storm!
